The 2026 edition of Digital Dealer’s Conference & Expo wrapped up in Detroit this week, bringing dealerships, vendors, and other industry leaders together at Huntington Place. Moving the event to the heart of the automotive world set a fitting backdrop for two days focused on the evolution of dealership technology and how to maneuver the rapid implementation of these innovations.
While discussions covered more than just digital retailing, there was a clear and consistent message throughout the sessions: dealerships are shifting away from adding isolated tools and winning by integrating their technology stack around connected data.
Here are four major takeaways from the show floor that every dealership leader should keep top of mind as we close out the year:
1. From Passive to Proactive
AI unsurprisingly remains a key focus, but the conversation shifted from conversational automation to autonomous agents and outbound intelligence. Panel speakers highlighted that answering inbound questions is no longer enough; the real opportunity lies in AI systems that proactively engage customers before they drop off. Whether it’s AI-assisted outbound follow-up or smart BDC workflows, successful stores are seeing more success when they can identify and engage with high-value opportunities, rather than waiting for them.
2. Eliminating Gaps by Unifying Disconnected Data
A common pain point mentioned was data fragmentation. Dealerships already possess massive amounts of shopper information, but because marketing data, website traffic, service histories, and messaging tools exist in separate silos, the customer journey breaks down. If your systems aren’t all cooperating, that customer story is going to be missing a few pieces. Speakers emphasized that breaking down these internal silos and unifying your data with Customer Data Platforms (CDPs) is essential for delivering modern customer experiences.
3. Protect Your Margins with Smarter and Personalized Marketing
With rising inventory costs and tighter margins, multiple sessions touched on how dealers could benefit from data-driven audits to trim inefficient marketing spend. "Winning the race to the bottom on price" is a losing strategy. Dealerships are finding success when those audits show them what’s working, trim what isn’t, and deploy personalized service offers that protect gross profit while boosting retention.
4. Balancing Speed with Authenticity
Despite the heavy emphasis on new technology, several panels provided an important reminder: technology is a tool that maximizes the efforts of your staff, not a replacement for culture and human interaction. The stores seeing the best results are those using AI to remove the friction and speed up response times, giving your BDC and sales teams more bandwidth to build trust with your customers and develop long-lasting relationships.
Looking Ahead
Digital Dealer 2026 made it clear that there is no reason for technology to create extra work for your team or confusion for your shoppers. Dealerships that find success now and beyond will be the ones that connect their data, streamline their processes, and deliver human-centered customer experiences.
